Particle Systems

(Unity, Aseprite)

This is a collection of different particle effects that I made for different projects, some school, some game jams, some never made it into the final project due to a change in direction.

Rain

This is a simple rain particle system I made for a school project. I made a simple animation of a raindrop splashing in Aseprite and then made a particle system in Unity that used it. Even though the sprite is extremely pixelated, that does not come off in the game due to how far away you could see the rain from. I have provided a gif of the rain animation, as well as a sample of the particle system in an empty scene.

Wind, Leaves and Dripping

For the game jam title An Autumn in Everry Town, our two artists and I decided that they would focus on making still un-animated art to be able to make more areas and content, and I would create a few interesting and pleasing particle effects to add motion to most of the environments. To that extent, I made some particle systems for a Legend of Zelda Wandmaker style wind effect (interpreted to be a 2d version), a fluttering leaf effect, and a simple dripping effect using similar shaping as the first wind effect.

The rest of the team and I feel like these effects were extremely successful in adding to the ambience and feel, whilst making it more visually appealing. I feel like these were a huge success considering that I only spent 2-3 hours on all these effects along with a special shader (mentioned here).

Looped Particles

For The Machine Stops I was challenged to make a unique visual indicator for one of the board elements without breaking our games monochrome aesthetic. After some exploration and talking to my team about my ideas, they wanted me to make a particular "atom" style animation, which I think turned out well, however was a waisted effort for this particular project since you can only see the effect from the top, and miss out on the depth of the effect.
